Amalfi: where to eat for a romantic dinner

Eating well, despite all

Amalfi is one of the most beautiful towns on the Amalfi coast.

Its beautiful Cathedral is also chosen by people of other nationalities to celebrate their weddings, so it is striking.

With spectacular views over the sea and  from the sea, Amalfi is a postcard.

For its beauty it is often crowd of tourists.

It is not uncommon in its main street to be so crowded that you can barely walk.

Finding places where you eat well when there are so many people is not easy, but Amalfi seems to be an exception.

I’ve been in this lovely town several times and found places where I cannot wait to go back for eating for the quality of the cuisine, that has not been let down by the crowd.

Three in a particular way.

 

La Caravella

La Caravella  by chef Dipino doesn’t need any presentation.

Highest quality of ingredients and abilities in combinations, never excessive.

Superb appetizers.

Try raw tuna and shrimp with Agerola’s whole bread baked twice so it can become a biscuit, cherry tomato and basil, olive oil, to simulate a panzanella. Fabulous.

Or the fried anchovies stuffed with provola and potatoes on broccoli and anchovies sauce.

Or the sword fish, grilled between two lemon leaves, seasoned with lemon, almonds and wild fennel; you will wonder how such a delicate dish can have such a  strong flavour .

The first course doesn’t worth less: great risotto with raw and cooked red prawns or Gragnano tubettes filled with octopus ragout.

If you still want to eat something, fresh fish fillets with lemon sauce and mashed potatoes will not disappoint you.

And to finish the sun in the dish, a lemon soufflé that takes an hour and a half of preparation and is done at the moment. If you want to taste it you have to ask it as soon as you arrive.

Ciccio cielo mare e terra

The trattoria opened years ago by Ciccio has become a very appreciated restaurant, not only thanks to the quality of the products, partly grown and partly chosen personally by Ciccio, but also for the passion of his son Marco,the chef, who gives to the traditional parthenope cuisine a modern and innovative footprint.

In the restaurant, the other three brothers illustrate the dishes and the choice of wines, all done with enthusiasm, competence and kindness.

Great starters.

Try the cod carpaccio with clams, scarlet, raisins,  olives and toasted almonds.

Or the squid on a purea of peas and crunchy bacon.

Among the first course notable are  cavatelli with seafood on lemon potato purea, whose scent gives the dish the flavor of the coast.

The Gerardo di Nola paccheri with octopus ragout, tasty and intense.

If you want to go on, eat the fish of the day soup with endive rolls and local olives. Superlative.

To finish the millefoglie with chantilly cream and cherries.

I forgot, if you are in Amalfi, the owners will come to bring you to the restaurant and take you back to the main square.

Al cancelletto

Just a short walk from the Amalfi cathedral, in the piazzetta dei Dogi where it seems to be in another world, out of the crowd invading the main street, this little restaurant tries to carry on its own project: the quality at the expense of the quantity.

So tables that allow a bit of privacy and excellent quality when choosing fishes and vegetables.

A few dishes, but well done. Giusy the chef and her companion at the tables try to give the best.

Great gnocchi (strictly handmade) of purple potatoes with seafood.

Notable are Ndunderi (a kind of gnocchi, but made with ricotta cheese) seasoned with olive oil, nuts and lemon. Delicious, they melt in the mouth.

Main course: the tuna tartare will make you feel the freshness of the raw material.

Or grated  cod on a bed of oranges and fennel, a finger-licking meal.

Millefoglie superlative. Also try the chocolate mousse with orange sauce.
